ANCHOR LEAD:

The City of San Marcos will begin construction on a new overpass located at the intersection of Aquarena Springs Drive and I-35.

The project will start early Jan. 2015 and take approximately two and a half years to complete.

According to the University News Service, officials from the Texas Department of Transportation say the project will improve safety and relieve congestion.

However, Texas State University junior Destiny Perkins feels differently.

(PERKINS SOT)

I feel like itŐs going to make traffic worse actually. ThatŐs what I feel like. I mean in 2 years, yeah, it will be a positive thing, but not right now. I donŐt think.

ANCHOR LEAD:

In an interview with the University Star, Associate Vice President of Facilities Juan Guerra said traffic might be down to one lane in each direction during some periods of time.

However, the lane is supposed to stay open the whole duration of the project.

The project will cost approximately 20 point seven million dollars.

The City of San Marcos, Texas Department of Transportation, and the Federal Highway Administration will fund the project.

Once the project is complete, crews will begin working on a similar project on the intersection at I-35 and Hopkins Street.
