A female Texas State University student was robbed by a man on a bicycle late Tuesday night while taking a shortcut through the Alkek Parking Garage.

Estella Garza, a sophomore Education major, was on her way home after studying for a biology test at the Alkek Library when the incident occurred.

ÒI was just thinking about all the stuff I needed to do when I got back to my room and all of a sudden I saw this blur of motion and this guy on a bike just came out of nowhere,Ó Garza said.

The man, described as wearing a ball cap, a University of Texas T-shirt, and a bandana over his face, grabbed GarzaÕs backpack off her shoulder, knocked her down, and rode off before she could react. The backpack contained her driverÕs license, two credit cards, and an estimated $432 worth of textbooks and miscellaneous personal items.

ÒIÕm so glad I had my phone and my keys in my pocket,Ó Garza said. ÒI called UPD (University Police Department) and I guess this other guy saw it and called too because he came over to see if I was OK.Ó

Garza, who suffered minor injuries, stated the only thing she was mad about was losing her biology textbook and notes.

ÒMy knees got scraped up, but not bad,Ó Garza said. ÒIÕm just glad I didnÕt have my computer with (me).Ó

This is the fourth robbery of this caliber since the start of the semester. Police believe the same man is responsible.

UPD Police Chief Ralph C. Meyer issued a statement the following morning saying he planned on forming a task force to address this problem.

ÒWe will have additional police officers patrolling campus in areas that may be vulnerable to this type of activity,Ó Meyer said.

Meyer urged students to use caution when walking at night, particularly in secluded areas of campus.

ÒIt is best to travel in groups and remain alert,Ó Meyer said. ÒIf you must travel alone, remember that the Bobcat Bobbies service is available for your safety.Ó

The police department is asking anyone with information about the robberies or any campus crime to call UPD at 512-245-2890.
